A traditional Russian lacquer-ware box with a lid, hand-painted with leaves and berries. This style of painting on wood is named after the village where it originated: Khokhloma in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast. It’s very popular in Russia and you often see spoons decorated in this way.

This little lidded box could be used for trinkets or even salt. It has some signs of wear on the top edge nearest the lid.
