Shop Eastern Bloc was set up in 2010 by Jasia Warren. Being half Polish has meant a lifelong love of the Eastern Bloc and in particular traditional crafts and flea market finds. However her inability to hoard often resulted in frustrated shopping trips to the local “targ” or “bazar” where beautiful and useful objects were seen but were not needed back home. Her cunning plan to get around this problem was to set up a shop so she could share the lovely finds with other people back in the UK whilst not having to fill her house up (of course this often backfires and her tea towel collection in particular is bulging).
We hope you enjoy the collections of things that are available here and that you will be inspired to go on trips yourselves to find your own goodies. Unfortunately it is getting harder to find handicrafts as the government-run cop-ops are closing and younger people are less interested in learning traditional techniques. Our ultimate aim is for Shop Eastern Bloc to be a marketplace for these crafts and to introduce them to new customers in the UK. Maybe by doing this we can help to keep craft alive somehow.
